Can an Agency Guarantee AI Rankings? No. Here Is What They Can Improve.

Can an Agency Guarantee AI Rankings? No. Here Is What They Can Improve.

The old SEO guarantee has been rebranded. Agencies that once promised page one of Google now promise the top of AI search, even though there is no single results page, no fixed rank, and no platform willing to hand them control.

No agency controls ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google’s AI answers, and nobody can guarantee a permanent top recommendation. A credible partner can improve clarity, technical access, proof, authority, consistency, measurement, and the experience that turns discovery into business.

If somebody guarantees your company will rank at the top of ChatGPT in 90 days, ask them to define “top.” Ask which platform, which question, which user, which location, which model, and which day. Then ask what happens when the answer changes an hour later.

The promise sounds concrete because the underlying system is confusing. That is exactly why it sells.

There is no universal AI ranking

Traditional search results can vary, but businesses can still observe positions for defined queries. AI answers are assembled responses. They change with wording, context, location, available sources, platform behavior, and model updates.

Visibility tools can test prompt sets and track how often a company appears. That is useful. Turning those samples into a guaranteed universal ranking is not.

What a credible partner can improve

Clarity: Make the business, services, markets, customers, locations, and differences easy to understand.

Technical access: Make important information crawlable, indexable, accessible, internally linked, and accurately represented with appropriate structured data.

Proof: Publish detailed case studies, reviews, expert explanations, comparisons, original experience, and evidence behind important claims.

Consistency: Reconcile the website, profiles, directories, executive bios, listings, and outside descriptions so they point to the same company.

Authority: Earn relevant third-party mentions, partnerships, coverage, citations, and participation in the places customers already trust.

Conversion: Make sure a recommendation leads to a page that confirms fit, reduces risk, shows proof, and makes the next step obvious.

What they should refuse to promise

They should not promise a permanent number-one recommendation, guaranteed citations, a specific revenue result before understanding the buying cycle, or hundreds of articles as a substitute for evidence.

They should also refuse to pretend every company needs the same work. A regional HVAC company needs strong local relevance, service clarity, reviews, availability, and useful location evidence. A B2B technology firm may need sharper positioning, expert proof, comparison content, and third-party authority. A wealth firm must build trust across advisor profiles, credentials, education, reviews, and a longer decision process.

How to evaluate the proposal

Ask what customer situations they will test, which platforms they will monitor, how they distinguish a mention from a qualified opportunity, which sources influence the answers, and what they will change when the evidence disagrees with the plan.

Ask to see the work behind the dashboard. If the proposal is mostly prompt tracking, automated content, and a proprietary score nobody outside the agency recognizes, you are buying theater.

The honest 90-day outcome

Ninety days can be enough to establish a baseline, fix serious technical and factual problems, improve priority pages, publish meaningful proof, clean up important profiles, and begin building outside authority. It can also be enough to learn which assumptions were wrong.

It is not enough to guarantee how every AI platform will answer every valuable question. The honest promise is better evidence, better decisions, and a stronger probability of being understood and considered.

Start with the whole system

If the acronyms are getting in the way, read SEO, AEO, and GEO: What Changed and What to Do First. It explains how the work fits together, where companies waste money, and which fundamentals deserve attention before another platform or promise.

Operating Question

What exactly is being guaranteed? Which prompts and platforms are included? How is customer fit measured? What work sits behind the score? Which factors are controllable? What happens when the answer changes?

Why It Matters

AI-ranking guarantees create false certainty around systems agencies do not control. Businesses should buy stronger foundations, evidence, authority, measurement, and decision support rather than a fictional permanent position.

Supporting Evidence

The burden of proof belongs to the agency

Ask for the methodology in plain language. A credible partner should explain the prompt set, testing frequency, sources, limitations, recommended work, and connection to customer behavior without hiding behind a proprietary score.

Google’s guidance does not require special AI schema or a magic AI file. It continues to emphasize accessible, useful, technically sound content and accurate information.

Research Notes

Why guarantees keep selling

Business owners want a clear outcome, and agencies want an easy offer. A 90-day guarantee compresses uncertainty into something that feels purchasable.

The problem is not ambition. The problem is assigning certainty to a result the seller cannot control. Put guarantees around the work, transparency, cadence, and accountability instead.

Practical Actions

Replace the guarantee with an operating agreement

Define the customer questions, markets, platforms, baseline, priority pages, evidence gaps, outside authority work, reporting cadence, and business measures before the engagement begins.

Require the agency to separate controllable improvements from external outcomes. Review what changed, what was learned, and what deserves the next dollar every month.
